There are several interesting changes to ControlLogix processors in the updated models coming in June. There will be two models initially a 1756-L73 and a 1756-L75. The L73 will have 8MB of memory and the L75 will have 32MB. The processors will have ATEX Global Certifications at release along with most other expected UL and CE marks. CIP communications connections will increase from 250 to 500 and general performance will be 2X that of current L6x processors for standard ladder logic and process applications. Additionally, the compact flash slot is replaced with a smaller SD memory card slot.
The serial port is also replaced with a USB 2.0 port. The USB port provides for uploading and downloading of programs, flashing firmware, online edits, and monitoring capabilities. The USB port also provides bridging of the backplane without any special communication adapters. So even less of the old complaints about the need for special cables or communication interfaces will be applicable. You’ll be able to use a standard USB cable to access ControlNet, DeviceNet, or EtherNet IP Networks.
